A ``public-spirited'' father and son were stabbed as they tried to protect a group of youths. 18 year old Edward Thompson and his father 53 year old Martin have been seriously injured in the incident in the West Heath area of Birmingham on Saturday night and remained in hospital today. West Midlands Police described the 18-year-old's condition as critical. His father was said to be stable. A police spokesman said: ``It appears both had come to the aid of one group of youths being chased by a second group of youths in Alvechurch Road.

Officials in prison systems across the United States have banned certain books as a way to prevent the flow of material that they say might incite violence. In Michigan, the ban has extended to several non-English language dictionaries. Over the last year, the Michigan Department of Corrections has banned dictionaries in Spanish and Swahili under claims that books' contents are a threat to the state's penitentiaries. "If certain prisoners all decided to learn a very obscure language, they would be able to then speak freely in front of staff and others about introducing contraband or assaulting staff or assaulting another prisoner,"
