The theatre makes for a fab family day out during the holidays, and throughout August children aged 16 and under can get free tickets to top London shows! Here are our top picks of participating shows not to miss - .
1. The Gruffalo
Expect songs, laughs and scary fun for your little ones in this magical musical stage adaptation of The Gruffalo. As Mouse takes a stroll through the deep, dark wood, spooking the other animals with his stories of the fearsome Gruffalo, he never imagines he could come face to face with the Gruffalo himself… Perfect for the little ones in your life age 3 and over.
2. Three Little Pigs
Another one for children aged 3+ is the stage version of The Three Little Pigs. This reinvention of the classic ‘tail’ sees the piggies become famous celebs as they simultaneously outwit the Big Bad Wolf. The show features memorable songs that the whole family will love and an award-winning cast whose credits include Sister Act, Les Miserables, Hairspray, The Lion King and Fame. Great for those age 3 and over.
3. The Lion King
This epic reimagining of Disney’s beloved animated film is spectacular and unforgettable. Exploding with colours, special effects and music that will have you bouncing in your seat, The Lion King is truly a show for all ages. 4. Matilda The Musical
There’s been huge hype around this musical, and it’s easy to see why. The multi Olivier award winning Musical version of Matilda is another fun-filled, wonderfully cheeky theatre gem for kids and grown-ups alike. The uplifting story of how a bright little girl uses her fantastical imagination to change her destiny is made even quirkier and more enjoyable by the music, dancing and stage design that will truly bring you into Matilda’s world. 5. Charlie And The Chocolate Factory
Another of Roahl Dahl’s deliciously twisted childhood worlds is brought to life. The timeless tale keeps children (and adults too) hoping for a golden ticket with every chocolate bar they open! When Charlie wins his golden ticket to the weird and wonderful Wonka Chocolate Factory he begins to realize that everything is not as it seems inside the sweet-filled rooms of his dreams. This show is choc-a-block full of brilliant stagecraft. Take snacks if you've a sweet tooth, as you'll need them!
6. Wicked
Exploding with glittering, emerald scenery and booming musical numbers, Wicked is perfect for older children. While we usually follow Dorothy and her companions down the yellow brick road, this story takes us right back to before Dorothy ever left Kansas – to when witches Glinda the Good and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, were best friends at school. Telling the surprising tale of how they gain their very different reputations, this is a show that carries an inspirational message.
7. Mamma Mia
While Mamma Mia! Is the paradise of any ABBA fan, its songs are so widely known that they’ll have anyone and everyone bouncing and singing along in their seat. The audience is practically guaranteed to leave the theatre in a better mood than when they arrive, having been transported to the summer sun of the Greek islands to see a daughter on the eve of her wedding, trying to discover which of three men from her mother’s past is her real father. 8. Bend It Like Beckham
Based on the hit film, this is a convention-defying story that sees British and Indian culture collide in a colourful and uplifting mash up of football, marriage, university plans and friendship. Jess is desperate to follow in the footsteps of her hero, David Beckham, but will she be able to keep her traditional family happy as well as follow her dreams? This is truly a joyous, riotous show that inspires kids with the strength of its message to be yourself, even if that means bending the rules.
9. War Horse
The War Horse hype never seems to run out – and there’s a good reason for it! This show features astonishingly life-like, life-size horse puppets, and it takes audiences on an extraordinary journey from the fields of Devon to the trenches of First World War France; as well as on an emotional rollercoaster (in the best possible way!). With the horses brought to life on stage alongside stirring music and a heart-wrenching story, this is an incredibly moving performance that everyone should see.
10. The Railway Children
This is a seriously unique production that is great to take the kids to – it features a stage built around a real train track, and a beautiful 60 tonne vintage steam engine that actually comes into the theatre! Hugely deserving of its Olivier award win for Best Entertainment, The Railway Children tells the story of Bobbie, Peter and Phyllis, and their adventure of a lifetime.
