7 things every guy needs before heading to the beach

Beach season has begun. Are you ready?

For every guy heading to the beach, we've prepared a seven-item checklist to make sure you're stylish, healthy, and well-prepared to frolic in the sun.

Don't leave home without them.

Sunglasses that fit your face.

Mr. Porter

Even men who don't typically wear sunglasses every day wear them to the beach. It's basically the law (or something).

You also need them to protect your eyes from UV radiation.

Get ones that fit your face correctly, and you'll be beach-ready in no time.

Dries Van Noten Round-Frame Metal Sunglasses ($345)

A beach towel that isn't hideous.

Mr. Porter

OK, so you don't need something super fancy. But a nice, big beach towel is absolutely essential to lay out in the sun.

And no, a top sheet or a bath towel isn't going to work in a pinch.

Thom Browne Striped Cotton Towel ($390)

Swim shorts that are the right length.

J Crew

There are a lot of terrible swimsuits out there on men. Don't wear one of those.

You need three things in a great swimsuit:

- A 6-inch or shorter inseam.

- An elastic waistband.

- A classic pattern or plain color.

Beyond those, it's up to you to find a fit and color you like.

One word of caution: avoid the "board shorts" trend.

J Crew 6" Swim Trunk ($70)

A hat to block the rays.

Straw Hat

Despite what we've said before about hats, we will admit that a hat is actually a great accompaniment to a day on the beach. It will keep the scorching sun out of your eyes and off your head, and can lend that relaxed look you're going for.

Just make sure you get one in straw, and only if you really want one. If you're not confident in it, you're going to look ridiculous.

Flip flops.

Mr. Porter

Flip flops and sandals are actually the only shoes you should wear to the beach.

Why? Sand. Sand is the problem, and open-toed shoes are the solution.

Plus, you'll probably want to kick off your shoes as quickly as possible once you hit the soft sand.

Sunscreen.

Sunscreen prevents skin cancer when you're exposed to the sun, like when you're at the beach.

Men are actually more likely than women to develop skin cancer, so it's even more important for the gents to wear sunscreen.

You need it! In broad spectrum! With at least 15 SPF!

Slather it on early and often, and you'll be better off for it. Don't forget it.

Something to pass the time.

Sure, most of the time you'll just be laying there.

But when you get bored of that, you'll want something to stimulate your mind and pass the time. Don't forget to pack a book.
